2010 Nevada Young Reader’s List

For all you voracious readers and overachievers out there, I’ve got a treat for you!  Next year’s Nevada Young Reader’s list has just been released.  There are some great titles on the list.  If you want to get a jump on next year’s recommended reading - go for it!  Take a peek over on the right side of this page - I’ll post the entire list there.

Coraline

Did anyone see the movie Coraline?  I didn’t get to view the 3-D version; I just saw the regular movie.  I loved it!  I hate to admit that I haven’t read the book yet, but now I can’t wait to start it.  Did you know that Neil Gaiman, the author of Coraline, is the author of this year’s Newbery winner, The Graveyard Book?  I’ve read glowing reviews of that book, too.  Time to get reading!

New Arrivals!

Two new orders came in today - boxes and boxes of books!  We got a handful of  biographies, some mythology and lots and lots of new fiction titles.  There’s just nothing better than brand new, never-been-checked-out-before books!  Stop by and check out our new arrivals!

Winter Reading

So, did you read anything interesting over the Winter Break?  We got another huge shipment of new books into the library right before we went out for the holiday.  I took a tall stack home over Christmas, but didn’t have time to read as much as I had hoped to.  I just started Eight Grade Bites (Chronicles of Vladimir Tod).  It’s a real easy read - I plan on finishing it tonight.  We’ve got the sequel, too!

Reading for Laptops!

How would you to win a brand-new laptop computer?  You might if you enter the Reading for Laptops contest!  If you’re interested, stop by the library to get all the details, but here’s the basics:

  • Read a book from a selected list.
  • Write a simple book review and give it to Mrs. Carney.
  • You’ve got an entry in the laptop contest!

You may enter as many times as you’d like - you just need to read another book.  All entries will be put into a middle school drawing at the end of the year.  Computer prizes are donated by the Silver State Schools Credit Union.  Good luck!

New Books!

The library received three huge book orders in the last couple of weeks.  We’ve put almost 200 new books on the shelves!  Most of the new books were fiction.  Some were replacements for books that have been lost, but there’s also a lot of new stuff to read!  We’ve got the newest selection in some of your favorite series - Brisingr by Christopher Paolini and the newest John Flanagan Ranger’s Apprentice book.  Of course, there’s always room for another copy of Twilight!  Stop by and check it out!

Twilight movie

So, have you seen the Twilight movie yet?  I was so excited when I got to the theater last Saturday!  I had my bag of kettle corn, warm cup of coffee, and I settled in for the movie I had been so anxiously waiting for!  Even though I always say, “The book is better than the movie”, I was not disappointed at all.  I thought the movie was absolutely fabulous!  How about you?  Did you think Edward’s skin was sparkly enough?  (That was my only real complaint - I wanted him to be blinding shiny in the sunlight!)  I’ve read that the script for New Moon is already completed.  I think I’m going to go back and read the book again before that movie comes out.  How about you?

The Book Fair has arrived!

The Fall Book Fair cases were delivered yesterday, and the selection of books looks fantastic!  I was a little worried after our disappointing choices last Spring, but I’m not worried anymore!  Come by the library and check it out - we’ve got Fablehaven, The Lightning Thief, The Ranger’s Apprentice, and more!  We’ve even got a movie companion book for Twilight!  Student sales start Monday, Nov. 17!

Twilight movie trailer

So, have you seen the movie trailer for Twilight yet?  I saw a quick preview on TV last night.  It was short - probably not even thirty seconds long.  It looked really good, but somehow I felt a little disappointed.  I’m wondering if this is going to be a situation where the movie can never live up to the book.  What do you think?

Lieder’s Readers Book Club

Are you a member of Lieder’s Readers Book Club?  We meet every other Wednesday after school in Mrs. Cantara’s room.  Our first book of the year is The Barcode Tattoo.  I can’t wait to hear tomorrow afternoon’s discussion about the first section of this controversial thriller!
